Newborns

Newborns are by far my favourite subjects., I adore them. The sessions are completely baby led and I work around you and your baby’s routine. You will never feel rushed as I only ever book in one newborn shoot a day. Some new parents find even leaving the house very daunting with such a tiny baby, but you really can give your newborn to me and know it is in the most safe and caring hands. I have received the best training with the most renowned newborn photographers in the industry.

My spotlessly clean studio is lovely, warm and cosy and perfectly set up for photographing newborns. I have an abundance of blankets, wraps, props and headbands in a huge variety of colours. You have no choice but to walk in the door and relax. I’ve even known a few dads be so relaxed they fall asleep! I’m not called “the baby whisperer” for nothing.

The best time to photograph your new little bundle is between 5-15 days new but I will accept babies up to 3 months old.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to book my newborn session?2019-04-12T17:11:55+01:00

In order to guarantee availability, I suggest making a booking after your 20 week scan because at this point you will have an idea of your due date. I will book a provisional date in the diary and amend that when you arrive at home with your new baby. Babies can obviously arrive early or late so I allow space in my diary to accommodate this. I will only book three newborn sessions in a week (one session a day) so be sure to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Newborn babies tend to sleep deeper in the morning so my sessions start either at 9.30am or 10am.

How old should my baby be for their newborn session?2019-04-27T19:49:49+01:00

The ideal period to photograph your baby is within 3 weeks of birth (with 5 – 15 days old being the optimal time). At this age your baby is still very sleepy and flexible and this allows me to safely and comfortably pose your baby into the beautiful, dreamy poses that are so popular. If you miss this small window, I can photograph your baby up to 12 weeks, but bear in mind babies are so much more alert and not so ‘curled up’ the later you leave it.

Where will the photoshoot be?2024-03-05T08:42:35+00:00

I perform all newborn shoots in my garden studio in Gerrards Cross, SL9. It’s a warm space, spotlessly clean and perfectly set up for newborn shoots, with an extensive choice of wraps, blankets and props to make your shoot unique to you.

What do I need to pay to book my session?2024-03-05T08:41:30+00:00

The deposit for booking with me is £150, this goes towards any package you decide to select after the shoot. The silver package is the minimum spend at £399. The deposit is payable at the time of making your booking and is only refunded due to unforeseen circumstances. Session fees cannot be refunded once your session has begun. An alternative session will always be offered in the event that you cannot make your session through illness or we have to end your session early through you or your baby’s ill health. You are investing in years of experience, talent and creative expertise.

What do I need to bring to the photoshoot?2019-04-12T17:13:22+01:00

Lots of extra nappies and extra milk for bottle fed babies. There are drinks and snacks at the studio. However, I suggest that you bring along some food especially if mum is breast feeding. Lastly if your baby takes a dummy/pacifier please bring it with you – they are a massive help when posing the baby and keeping them in a sleepy state. If you don’t use one, I keep new, sealed and sterilised dummies here in the studio – they REALLY help. However, if you prefer that I don’t use one, that’s fine as well. Please note – the temperature in the studio will be at least 26 degrees C (80 degrees F) so please don’t come dressed in any warm clothing as you will swelter.

What should we wear?2021-10-24T09:08:40+01:00

Please note – this is just a guide to help you, it’s not set in stone. If you have a certain colour scheme and/or certain clothes you wish to wear, please bring them along.

Dads: Bring a plain tight fitting t-shirt or shirt to wear with a pair of jeans. If you can, please bring a black and a white option. A simple white collared shirt with sleeves that can roll up is also good. I usually try to convince Dad to take off his top so we get some amazing skin on skin shots but only if Dad is up for it of course. The most important thing is that Dad feels comfortable in what he is wearing and feels like himself, so as long as it’s not a striped or printed top – anything goes! What I have written above is just a guide.

Mums: Keep your clothes neutral and a simple design. If you are not sure what to bring, please bring a white/cream and black T shirt type vest, so we can get skin next to baby, making sure you have the correct underwear.

Sisters: Please bring along a good fitting pretty dress or 2 piece. Nothing too big. I can provide a wrap that will act as the perfect top or a selection of dresses or onesies.

Brothers: A pair of jeans and a simple t-shirt or vest is best. Neutral colours please. I also have a selection at the studio if you require.

Can you recommend a hair and make up artist?2019-06-30T12:14:41+01:00

I can highly recommend a lovely make up artist, Georgia Sitwell who is based in Gerrards Cross. She’s recently graduated from a very prestigious make up course and I have used her on numerous occasions. Prices start from £30. www.geesmakeup.com Email: georgiaella@googlemail.com Mob: 07546378675

Can we bring siblings to the photoshoot?2019-04-12T17:14:02+01:00

Yes, of course it’s fine to bring siblings to the shoot. Having a newborn baby in the family is exciting for everyone and capturing a picture of siblings together is a must. Make sure you tell them it’s an exciting and fun day to look forward to. Please just let me know in advance how many siblings and their ages. I will do sibling and family shots for the first 30-60 minutes of the session. I prefer siblings to then leave the studio, if possible, so we can have a quiet calm environment to concentrate on newborn baby photos. There is a park nearby with swings and slides which Daddy can always take your older child to.

Do I pay extra for twins or triplets?2019-04-12T17:14:20+01:00

No, I don’t charge extra for twins or triplets.

What if my baby is premature?2019-07-21T11:51:02+01:00

Depending how premature your baby is, I adjust the shoot date. I will also take baby’s birth weight into consideration.

Can I use my mobile phone to take photos during the shoot?2019-07-21T11:55:36+01:00

I am happy for you to take a few photos or a video of the shoot itself so you can remember babies first photoshoot. But please refrain from taking close up photos of your baby when I am; it can distract me and interfere with my lights. If you are posting video or photos on social media to document the day, please can you remember to tag “Rebecca Fitch Photography”.

Can I choose the colour scheme for the photo shoot?2019-04-12T17:22:44+01:00

If there are any of my photos on my website, Facebook or Instagram that you love and would like me to recreate for you and your baby, please make me aware before the day of your shoot – especially your colour choices and prop choices.

What if my baby is jaundiced or has flaky skin?2019-04-12T17:15:12+01:00

Please don’t worry if your baby is jaundiced, I can take the yellow skin tone out in my editing process. Your baby will likely have a few patches of dry skin on the day of the session, this is perfectly normal. Please do not apply oil to your baby’s skin. It is much easier to retouch flaky skin than to fix excessively shiny skin in Photoshop.

How do I prepare on the day of my shoot?2019-04-12T17:15:26+01:00

As a Newborn photographer I can only advise you on what is best for a really smooth, easy and completely relaxed session. I want you and your baby to be completely at ease on the day of your session and I would like to stress that this is a guideline only. Please do not put yourself or your baby under any stress or discomfort trying to follow this guideline. It is more important for you to look forward to your session and the beautiful pictures we are going to capture of your new family.

Either give your baby a full feed before travelling to the studio or aim to do this as soon as you arrive. If breastfeeding, avoid caffeine before the session and try not to eat spicy food the day before either. The most important advice is to keep your baby up for at least an hour or more before coming to see me. Try giving your baby a bath, some naked nappy free time and lots of stimulation. This is especially important for babies older than 14 days. It will make it much easier to get those cute, squishy, curled up shots. Lastly, please don’t worry if your baby has been restless and been up all night before you come to see me, I am sure you will be feeling extremely exhausted but it makes for a great shoot with a super tired baby.

What if my baby doesn’t sleep?2019-04-12T17:15:44+01:00

If your baby is very curious and takes a little while to settle do not worry. I will take some beautiful awake pictures to capture that little personality. Your baby will fall asleep at some point and we will then capture those dreamy sleepy poses. Patience is the key to a successful session and I have tons of it!

Do I have to be in the photographs?2019-04-12T17:16:12+01:00

I really encourage you to have a few pictures taken as a family. Photographing the connection between you and your baby is one of my favourite parts of the session. Don’t forget that I am taking pictures for your baby too. These are images he or she will cherish most in the years to come.

Why does a newborn shoot take so long?2019-04-13T18:51:52+01:00

A typical session will last between three and four hours and apart from feeding your baby, I will be settling and posing your little one throughout that time. The session cannot be rushed, we have to work completely around your baby’s routine. With a very unsettled baby it can last up to 5 hours!

What will happen during the photo session?2019-04-12T17:16:44+01:00

Your baby will normally fall asleep in the car on the way to the studio so please dress the baby for the journey in clothing that does not have to go over their head. You can leave your baby in the car seat, so I can start taking pictures straightaway. The baby will be either photographed nude in the session or will be wrapped. Please do not feel embarrassed if your baby pees or poos on the blankets, props or me. I am quite used to it and it is one of the few “occupational hazards” a newborn photographer encounters!

Will my baby be safe?2019-04-12T17:17:00+01:00

Newborn photography is a completely unregulated industry. Anyone can advertise themselves as a newborn photographer without necessarily having the correct training or expertise to handle and photograph your baby safely. At Rebecca Fitch Photography your baby will be in very safe and experienced hands. I practise safe posing techniques and will sometimes ask a parent to help out making sure a supporting hand is very close to the baby when required. I have attended numerous newborn training workshops and have learnt from some of the best photographers in the industry. I am also DBS checked and fully insured.

What if my baby is poorly on the shoot date?2019-04-12T17:17:15+01:00

If your baby is poorly then I will reschedule your shoot date. This can mean shooting outside of the 3 week time frame but sometimes this is unavoidable.

Can I park at the studio?2019-04-12T17:17:30+01:00

Yes there is plenty of parking in the driveway.

How long will the session last?2019-07-21T11:58:11+01:00

Sessions last between 3-4 hours, sometimes longer if your baby is a light sleeper, very alert or just a hungry baby. Be prepared to feed as and when needed whether it be bottle or breast, so please bring extra bottles if you are bottle feeding. For this reason I book out the whole day in my diary, please make sure you haven’t planned anything else. Babies can’t be rushed.

How long after the session before we can see the online gallery?2019-04-12T17:18:22+01:00

Your final gallery of approximately 50 – 60 beautiful images will be ready to view between two and three weeks after your session. I will email you the login details to your own password protected online gallery which you can view through the website. You will then have 14 days to select the photos and upgrade your package if you wish.

Can we purchase wall art after the shoot?2024-03-05T08:47:00+00:00

I use one of the best award-winning labs in the country for all my wall art. Fantastic quality pieces of art that really do last a lifetime. Please click here to view Wall Art options. Contact me for pricing.

How can I upgrade my package?2019-04-12T17:18:50+01:00

After you have seen your full gallery, you can either stay with the silver package which you have already purchased or upgrade.

Are there any hidden costs or hard sell?2019-06-02T10:20:53+01:00

I have thought long and hard about what sort of service I would like to receive if I were you – the customer. I would definitely like the opportunity to choose my package or products in the comfort of my own home. In our current busy lives , we all seem to have less time than ever – so I just send you a link by email to select your pictures within 14 days. There is no returning for a viewing, no hard sell and absolutely no pressure. I personally would hate a pushy sales appointment. I have tried really hard to display lots of amazing wall art products on the website to help you chose the perfect size and the right products for your wall.
